Saturated Steam VorCone Meter at Boiler Outlet

A boiler operator had the quality setting at 72%. Apart from trusting the boiler manufacturer’s specifications, the only way of checking the boiler outlet quality was the traditional laborious manual method of periodically comparing the boiler inlet and outlet water sample relative salinities.

As with many industrial processes that use saturated steam flow as a thermal energy transmission method, too low a steam quality produces an inefficient process, and too high a steam quality can cause scale deposits on the pipeline. For an efficient scale free operation it is important to keep the desired steam quality. And for that an inline steam quality meter is desired.

Fig 1. 4” Saturated Steam VorCone Meter

The boiler operator installed a 4” saturated steam VorCone meter, see Figure 1. The 4” VorCone meter immediately showed a steady quality prediction of 73%, i.e. just 1% from the expected nominal 72%.
